Every number below is printed in the abstract of the record cited beside it. Written for someone standing in a pharmacy aisle holding a box of strips and for the clinician who is asked, four times a week, whether this ruins enamel. Not medical or dental advice.
The short answers
- Does it work? Yes, and the effect is measurable rather than cosmetic lighting. In a randomised triple-blind split-mouth trial, two weeks of at-home gel produced a colour change of ΔE00 = 5.39 (SD 2.50) with 3% hydrogen peroxide and 4.75 (SD 2.25) with 8% carbamide peroxide, both above the clinical acceptability threshold the authors used of ΔE00 > 1.8 (Chu et al., BMC Oral Health 2025-11-01, PMID 41194058). Over 18 months, five different in-office high-concentration agents kept ΔE00 between 3.56 and 4.74 (Gönüllü et al., J Clin Med 2026-05-01, PMID 42123190). A systematic review of 30 articles found every bleaching type effective at changing colour, with home trays showing lower recurrence than in-office (Butera et al., Bioengineering (Basel) 2024-11-01, PMID 39767997).
- Does it damage enamel? The human in situ and in vivo evidence maps a temporary change, not a permanent one. Across 24 studies (21 in situ, 3 in vivo) the pattern is biphasic: immediate superficial mineral loss, higher roughness and lower microhardness, especially with acidic formulations, then recovery driven by saliva, typically between 7 and 15 days; the review also notes that enamel grinding and polishing in study designs can overestimate damage, and that whitening toothpastes have a less favourable profile because they work by abrasion (de Boa et al., J Dent 2026-07-01, PMID 42537898). The older toxicology review remains the boundary document: sensitivity in 15% to 78% of patients and a recommendation to avoid more than 10% carbamide peroxide for external bleaching (Dahl et al., Crit Rev Oral Biol Med 2003-01-01, PMID 12907697).
- Is more better? Mostly no. An umbrella review of 24 systematic reviews graded as moderate certainty the finding that low-to-medium in-office hydrogen peroxide (about 25% to 35%) gives whitening comparable to higher concentrations while reducing sensitivity (Hajeer et al., Saudi Dent J 2026-03-01, PMID 41896506). The first network meta-analysis of at-home carbamide peroxide found no significant difference between concentrations for shade-unit change; for colour change, every concentration beat CP 5%, with the largest difference for CP 37%, and intermediate concentrations differed minimally — while CP 10% had a 67% lower risk of tooth sensitivity than CP 20–22% (RR 1.67; 95% CrI 1.15 to 2.57) and 20–22% caused significantly higher sensitivity intensity (Cordeiro et al., Jpn Dent Sci Rev 2025-12-01, PMID 41244666).
- Does the lamp help? No, and it can hurt. The umbrella review of 10 systematic reviews on optical activation found laser or light activation produced no consistent improvement in final whitening, did not reduce sensitivity and was less favourable in some high-energy protocols, with parameter-dependent thermal concerns for the pulp; it does support photobiomodulation as a sensitivity-reducing adjunct (Allende et al., J Esthet Restor Dent 2026-09-01, PMID 42076873). The in-office protocol umbrella says the same about LED, halogen and laser generally, while noting a limited new signal for violet light with carbamide peroxide (Hajeer et al., Saudi Dent J 2026-03-01, PMID 41896506). The older review had already called the light-activation evidence “limited and conflicting” (Joiner et al., J Dent 2006-08-01, PMID 16569473).
- What about the box on the shelf? Strips at 3% hydrogen peroxide work: in a randomised controlled trial of 70 adults with extrinsic staining, objective W* values rose from 72.86 to 78.73 and VITA 3D-Master values fell from 14.91 to 11.23 with improvement increasing over the 14 days, adverse events were mild (no significant difference from placebo, p > 0.05) and no serious adverse events were reported (Wang et al., Front Oral Health 2026-01-01, PMID 42058465). A 3% hydrogen-peroxide toothpaste did not: in a 90-participant randomised trial it produced significantly less colour change than 10% carbamide-peroxide home bleaching at one month, and still caused sensitivity and gum irritation (Santos et al., J Dent 2026-08-01, PMID 42637208).
- Blue paste is a trick, not a treatment — but an honest one. A systematic review and meta-analysis of blue-covarine toothpastes found significant improvement in measured colour and in perceived brightness versus placebo, consistent across designs, sample sizes and follow-up, with the authors noting heterogeneity, small samples and unknown long-term effects (Jelenčiakova et al., Int J Dent Hyg 2026-05-01, PMID 41423735). It is a colour-corrector that washes out; it removes no stain and changes no structure.
- The real safety problem is the unlabelled market, not the chemistry. In a study that test-bought peroxide gels online and analysed them against the European Pharmacopoeia, one of six was never delivered, another arrived without instructions, the ingredient list was incomplete or missing for 100% of the online products, precautionary statements appeared for only 16.7% while safety claims appeared for 83.3%, one sample contained no active principle at all, two exceeded their labelled peroxide content by 5.2% to 9.0% and two were below it by 79.9% to 80.7% (Fittler et al., Heliyon 2023-09-01, PMID 37809774).
What whitening actually does to a tooth
Peroxide bleaching is a chemical reaction inside the tooth, not a scrub on it. The older mechanistic review describes a dynamic process with micromorphological and optical changes as the agent diffuses in and interacts with stains, and states that professional supervision is “imperative” for a successful and safe outcome (Kwon et al., J Esthet Restor Dent 2015-09-01, PMID 25969131); the same family of reviews identifies concentration and contact time as the drivers of the result, with lower concentrations able to approach higher ones when worn longer (Joiner et al., J Dent 2006-08-01, PMID 16569473). What people call “the enamel got thinner” is, in the human in situ evidence, something else: an immediate loss of surface mineral and microhardness with higher roughness, then salivary remineralisation restoring most of it in 7 to 15 days (de Boa et al., J Dent 2026-07-01, PMID 42537898).
Two consequences follow. First, the day-after measurement is not the outcome: if you assess a tooth immediately you are reading a dehydrated, transiently demineralised surface, which is also why shade matching and photos taken right after a session are misleading. Second, the surface most likely to suffer is the one abraded rather than oxidised — the review of enamel and mineral dynamics places whitening dentifrices in a less favourable profile precisely because their mechanism is abrasive (de Boa et al., J Dent 2026-07-01, PMID 42537898), and an optical-coherence-tomography study of five commercial products found enamel wear in every group, with the most worn specimen at about 90% in one whitening gel against 22.2% in a control group brushed with distilled water (Neto et al., Clin Oral Investig 2026-03-01, PMID 41915234).
Concentration: the variable the marketing gets wrong

Read the table as one sentence you can actually use: within the range sold, concentration buys you speed and sensitivity, not a whiter final colour — and the moderate-certainty evidence is on the side of the lower concentrations (Hajeer et al., Saudi Dent J 2026-03-01, PMID 41896506) (Cordeiro et al., Jpn Dent Sci Rev 2025-12-01, PMID 41244666). This inverts the way the products are marketed, which is why “professional strength” is an aesthetic claim about the experience, not a claim about the endpoint.
Sensitivity and gums: what is normal, what is not
Sensitivity is the expected effect, not an allergic surprise: the older safety review put it in 15% to 78% of patients (Dahl et al., Crit Rev Oral Biol Med 2003-01-01, PMID 12907697), and in a trial comparing six commercial bleaching systems in 60 participants, higher sensitivity was recorded in one group by 50% of participants, gingival irritation in another by 60%, and the authors concluded that sensitivity and gum irritation develop irrespective of the system used (Elnawawy et al., Cureus 2024-07-01, PMID 39205783). What changes the experience is the additive rather than the brand: in a randomised trial of 120 people bleached with 40% hydrogen peroxide and then assigned to six toothpaste groups, no group differed significantly in colour change at any point, sensitivity was transient and resolved within one week in all groups, and the formulation containing a desensitising agent (potassium nitrate) had lower early scores (Gok et al., J Esthet Restor Dent 2026-07-01, PMID 42501317). That matches the umbrella conclusion that potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride reduce sensitivity without costing you whiteness (Hajeer et al., Saudi Dent J 2026-03-01, PMID 41896506).
Where pain behaves oddly — lingering, spontaneous, waking you at night — that is not bleaching sensitivity, and the diagnostic framework for true dentin hypersensitivity is explicit that the condition is defined by short, sharp pain on thermal, evaporative, tactile, osmotic or chemical stimulus in the absence of other pathology, and that diagnosis requires controlled stimulation tests and exclusion of pulpal, periodontal, restorative and structural disease (Kaur et al., J Conserv Dent Endod 2026-04-01, PMID 42004794). In other words: if the pain outlives the treatment week, it deserves its own diagnosis instead of being absorbed into the whitening story.
Toothpastes, strips, pens and the blue trick
The category that most needs a label is whitening toothpaste. The abrasion data above is one side; the other is that several of them simply do nothing chemical. In a bovine study comparing tricalcium-phosphate dentifrices with charcoal or hydrogen peroxide against a monofluorophosphate control, all groups lost whiteness index after the simulated six months of brushing, the charcoal-containing formula darkened more than the others, and the authors concluded that neither charcoal nor tricalcium-phosphate paste had bleaching efficacy and none damaged enamel surface properties (Santos et al., Braz Dent J 2026-01-01, PMID 41983796). And the colour you do get from many of these pastes is optical: the blue-covarine meta-analysis found significant improvements in perceived brightness with consistent subgroup results but heterogeneity and small samples, with the authors calling for long-term safety data (Jelenčiakova et al., Int J Dent Hyg 2026-05-01, PMID 41423735).
Strips sit between the two. The randomised trial of low-concentration 3% hydrogen-peroxide strips in 70 adults found objective and subjective improvement that increased with continued use over 14 days, with no significant difference in adverse events versus placebo and no serious events (Wang et al., Front Oral Health 2026-01-01, PMID 42058465). The 3% peroxide toothpaste trial, by contrast, ended with the conclusion that brushing with it “did not promote effective tooth bleaching and was associated with tooth sensitivity and gingival irritation”, and that its use as a bleaching treatment is not recommended (Santos et al., J Dent 2026-08-01, PMID 42637208). Same ingredient, same nominal concentration, different contact time and delivery: that is the mechanism, not the brand.
Why your crowns and fillings will not match afterwards
Peroxide lightens natural tooth structure; it does not lighten composite, ceramic or the margins of an old filling. This is the single most common and most expensive surprise in aesthetic dentistry, and the reason the material research exists: a systematic review of single-shade resin composites — the products sold as solving shade matching — found that most of the eight included studies (362 restorations) reported an acceptable colour match after bleaching in vitro, with quality generally moderate to low and effectiveness varying with bleaching duration and storage conditions (Miranda et al., J Clin Med 2025-05-01, PMID 40364225). “In vitro” is doing heavy lifting in that sentence: a match demonstrated on extracted teeth in a lab is a promise to be suspicious of in your mouth, and the sequencing rule is still the old one — bleach first, wait for the colour to settle, then replace what no longer matches (Dahl et al., Crit Rev Oral Biol Med 2003-01-01, PMID 12907697).
Two special cases belong here. A single grey tooth after trauma is a different disease: the review of masking one discoloured tooth lists scaling, microabrasion, air abrasion, vital and non-vital bleaching and resin infiltration as the conservative ladder, and notes that mimicking natural teeth remains one of the hardest things in restorative dentistry (Aljanahi et al., Br Dent J 2025-06-01, PMID 40579512). For a root-treated tooth the classic approach is internal or “walking bleach”, and the guideline-level review is explicit that it is safe and effective at low concentrations but that higher-concentration hydrogen peroxide of 30% to 35% is associated with external cervical root resorption, that thermocatalytic approaches should be avoided and that a base or sealer over the root filling is prudent (Kahler et al., Int Endod J 2022-10-01, PMID 35188275). If a tooth whitens unevenly because of a white-brown opacity from disturbed enamel formation, the stepwise aesthetic approach puts bleaching before bonding as a first-line, structure-preserving option (Greenwall et al., J Esthet Restor Dent 2026-03-01, PMID 41277819) — and the underlying lesion itself is a different story, covered on our page about white spots.
Children, teens, pregnancy: the honest answer
There is no trial showing that bleaching is safe for a 14-year-old, and the record we verified does not contain one; what exists is peroxide-free territory. A systematic review of hydrogen-peroxide-free colour correctors found in vitro ΔE00 values of 3.5 on bovine incisors and 2.8 on human molars against up to 8.9 for carbamide peroxide, with sensitivity in fewer than 3% of subjects, and its own conclusion is that the evidence is one clinical trial of 60 participants plus five in vitro studies, synthesised narratively rather than pooled — supporting these products as “moderate but safe alternatives for young patients” on present data (Boruga et al., Dent J (Basel) 2025-07-01, PMID 40863049). That is the correct register for this question: a moderate, cosmetic, temporary effect; not whitening in the chemical sense.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding we did not find a verified trial of bleaching in those states, so this article makes no safety claim about them; the older review’s risk assessment concerns external bleaching regimens in adults and its threshold recommendation (avoid above 10% carbamide peroxide) is a design limit, not a permission (Dahl et al., Crit Rev Oral Biol Med 2003-01-01, PMID 12907697). The practical advice is the boring one: postpone elective whitening until after pregnancy and lactation, because nobody has measured it, and because gum tissue in pregnancy is already more reactive.
Cost, coverage and the Utah reality
Whitening is where the gap between what people want and what benefit design funds is widest. Utah’s published children’s Medicaid dental benefit does not contain a bleaching or whitening line at all: the words do not appear anywhere in the summary, which lists its dental items as diagnostic, preventive (cleanings twice a calendar year, fluoride treatments including varnish up to four times a year, sealants once every two years per eligible tooth), restorative (fillings once every two years per tooth surface, with replacement inside that window generally not covered unless there is a specific medical reason), and endodontic, surgical and orthodontic categories with their own rules — and it explicitly lists nitrous oxide analgesia as not covered, while general anaesthesia and intravenous sedation are covered only where local anaesthesia is unsafe, documented (data as of 4 February 2026; see Additional documents). Cosmetic re-shading of teeth is simply outside the structure.
That produces a concrete shopping list for a family paying cash, ordered by what buys the most: a cleaning that removes the extrinsic stain layer, then treating the reason teeth look dull (arrested decay, worn enamel, white spot lesions), then a peroxide product with a real label, at the lowest concentration that you will actually wear for the required hours, and a desensitising paste in the same basket — because the pooled evidence says the potassium-nitrate or fluoride additive is what makes the week tolerable (Hajeer et al., Saudi Dent J 2026-03-01, PMID 41896506) (Gok et al., J Esthet Restor Dent 2026-07-01, PMID 42501317). Paying for the lamp is the one line item with no support: two syntheses, one of 24 reviews and one of 10, find no consistent efficacy gain from light or laser activation and some added sensitivity (Hajeer et al., Saudi Dent J 2026-03-01, PMID 41896506) (Allende et al., J Esthet Restor Dent 2026-09-01, PMID 42076873).
How to read this like a clinician
- Document shade with a device, not with a memory: the trials that produced usable numbers used spectrophotometric ΔE00 or ΔSGU with defined acceptability thresholds, which is the only way to say later whether something happened (Chu et al., BMC Oral Health 2025-11-01, PMID 41194058) (Wang et al., Front Oral Health 2026-01-01, PMID 42058465).
- Set expectations with the concentration literature: choose 10% carbamide peroxide at home or 25–35% in office, and say explicitly that higher concentration buys speed and sensitivity, not a brighter endpoint (Cordeiro et al., Jpn Dent Sci Rev 2025-12-01, PMID 41244666) (Hajeer et al., Saudi Dent J 2026-03-01, PMID 41896506).
- Prescribe the desensitiser at the start, not after the first bad night: potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride reduce sensitivity without reducing efficacy (umbrella, moderate certainty) and the trial evidence shows lower early scores with the additive (Hajeer et al., Saudi Dent J 2026-03-01, PMID 41896506) (Gok et al., J Esthet Restor Dent 2026-07-01, PMID 42501317).
- Screen before you sell: abnormal pain, unrestored lesions, exposed roots, cervical defects, allergy history and pregnancy. The hypersensitivity review is explicit that pain must be attributed by controlled testing and exclusion before being labelled a treatment side effect (Kaur et al., J Conserv Dent Endod 2026-04-01, PMID 42004794).
- Talk about the sealant and restoration problem before bleaching, not after: single-shade composites matched bleached tissue acceptably in eight in vitro studies of moderate-to-low quality, which is not a guarantee for your patient’s front teeth (Miranda et al., J Clin Med 2025-05-01, PMID 40364225).
- For non-vital single teeth, follow the safety rule rather than the shortcut: 30–35% hydrogen peroxide inside the tooth has an association with external cervical root resorption, avoid thermocatalytic activation and place a base or sealer (Kahler et al., Int Endod J 2022-10-01, PMID 35188275).
- Advise against unlabelled online gel as a category, using the assay numbers rather than moralising: concentrations off label by 5.2–9.0% upward and 79.9–80.7% downward, one product with no active ingredient at all (Fittler et al., Heliyon 2023-09-01, PMID 37809774).
- Record that enamel findings are transient: the human in situ and in vivo synthesis shows recovery within 7–15 days under salivary influence, and warns that polished-specimen designs overestimate injury (de Boa et al., J Dent 2026-07-01, PMID 42537898).

What the evidence does not support
- That paying for a lamp makes you whiter. Two umbrella-level syntheses agree there is no consistent efficacy gain from light or laser activation, with added sensitivity in some protocols (Hajeer et al., Saudi Dent J 2026-03-01, PMID 41896506) (Allende et al., J Esthet Restor Dent 2026-09-01, PMID 42076873).
- That higher concentration reaches a higher ceiling. At home, the network meta-analysis found no significant difference between carbamide-peroxide concentrations in shade-unit change, with a clear difference only in sensitivity risk (Cordeiro et al., Jpn Dent Sci Rev 2025-12-01, PMID 41244666).
- That whitening toothpaste is a bleaching treatment. One randomised trial of a 3% hydrogen-peroxide paste concluded it did not promote effective bleaching while still causing sensitivity and gingival irritation (Santos et al., J Dent 2026-08-01, PMID 42637208), and charcoal and tricalcium-phosphate pastes showed no bleaching efficacy at all (Santos et al., Braz Dent J 2026-01-01, PMID 41983796).
- That “natural” means risk-free in this category. The unlabelled online market is where the actual hazard was measured — wrong concentrations, missing ingredients lists, one product with no active principle (Fittler et al., Heliyon 2023-09-01, PMID 37809774).
- That enamel damage from bleaching is permanent in humans. The in situ and in vivo synthesis describes transient changes recovering within 7–15 days (de Boa et al., J Dent 2026-07-01, PMID 42537898).
- That a whitening result is a full-mouth plan. Restorations do not bleach on the same timetable, and the evidence for “adaptive” single-shade composites is in vitro, of moderate to low quality (Miranda et al., J Clin Med 2025-05-01, PMID 40364225).
- That we can tell you whether it is safe in pregnancy. Nothing verified here is a trial of bleaching in pregnancy or lactation, so the answer is that it is unstudied, not that it is safe (Dahl et al., Crit Rev Oral Biol Med 2003-01-01, PMID 12907697).
A plan, if you want one
- Fix the canvas first. Clean the stain layer, treat decay and exposed roots, and only then consider colour: the reviews that describe safe, effective external bleaching describe it on prepared, healthy teeth with trays (Kahler et al., Int Endod J 2022-10-01, PMID 35188275) (Dahl et al., Crit Rev Oral Biol Med 2003-01-01, PMID 12907697).
- Pick the lowest concentration you will actually use. 10% carbamide peroxide at home is the option where moderate-certainty evidence puts efficacy and sensitivity on the same side (Cordeiro et al., Jpn Dent Sci Rev 2025-12-01, PMID 41244666) (Hajeer et al., Saudi Dent J 2026-03-01, PMID 41896506).
- Add the desensitiser from day one — potassium nitrate or sodium fluoride toothpaste in the same month, not the day the pain starts (Hajeer et al., Saudi Dent J 2026-03-01, PMID 41896506) (Gok et al., J Esthet Restor Dent 2026-07-01, PMID 42501317).
- Skip the lamp and, if you are buying strips, buy ones with an ingredient list and a stated concentration on the packaging (Allende et al., J Esthet Restor Dent 2026-09-01, PMID 42076873) (Fittler et al., Heliyon 2023-09-01, PMID 37809774).
- Decide before you bleach about the crowns and fillings, because after a colour change you will be matching to a new target: the sequence is bleach, settle, then restore (Miranda et al., J Clin Med 2025-05-01, PMID 40364225).
- Take a photo with a shade tab today and one 14 days after you stop, not the morning after the first application: the first-day result is partly dehydration (de Boa et al., J Dent 2026-07-01, PMID 42537898) (Chu et al., BMC Oral Health 2025-11-01, PMID 41194058).
Frequently asked questions
Is teeth whitening safe for my enamel? On the human evidence, the changes are transient: immediate superficial mineral loss, roughness and microhardness reduction, then recovery in 7 to 15 days driven by saliva, with methodological caveats that likely overestimate injury (de Boa et al., J Dent 2026-07-01, PMID 42537898). The upper limit that the older review drew was formulation strength — avoid more than 10% carbamide peroxide externally — and that number still functions as a design rule (Dahl et al., Crit Rev Oral Biol Med 2003-01-01, PMID 12907697).
Why does it hurt, and what stops it? Peroxide diffuses to the pulp and the tissue responds; the hydrodynamic mechanism in exposed dentin explains why a worn or receded neck hurts on cold and air (Kaur et al., J Conserv Dent Endod 2026-04-01, PMID 42004794). The measured fix is the additive: potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride lower sensitivity without lowering efficacy, and photobiomodulation is the only adjunct with a consistent benefit in the umbrella literature (Hajeer et al., Saudi Dent J 2026-03-01, PMID 41896506) (Allende et al., J Esthet Restor Dent 2026-09-01, PMID 42076873).
Do whitening strips ruin teeth? The trial evidence does not show that: 3% peroxide strips improved colour objectively and subjectively over 14 days with adverse-event rates not significantly different from placebo and no serious events (Wang et al., Front Oral Health 2026-01-01, PMID 42058465). What does damage surfaces is abrasion — from whitening pastes used hard, and from brushing immediately after acid exposure, which is a different mechanism covered in our erosion review.
Can I whiten while pregnant or breastfeeding? There is no verified trial, so this page does not answer yes. The relevant literature we could verify describes adult risk assessment rather than pregnancy (Dahl et al., Crit Rev Oral Biol Med 2003-01-01, PMID 12907697) — which is an argument for waiting, not for reassurance.
What about my teenager? The only products with data in younger patients are peroxide-free colour correctors, and the systematic review’s own framing is modest: ΔE00 3.5 and 2.8 in vitro against up to 8.9 for carbamide peroxide, sensitivity in fewer than 3%, one clinical trial of 60 participants, five in vitro studies, narrative synthesis only (Boruga et al., Dent J (Basel) 2025-07-01, PMID 40863049). A cosmetic colour-corrector is a different promise from bleaching, and the honest way to present it is as temporary.
Will my old fillings match? No. The composite and ceramic do not bleach with the tooth; the single-shade materials tested in vitro were reported to match acceptably in most of eight studies, of moderate to low quality (Miranda et al., J Clin Med 2025-05-01, PMID 40364225). If the front teeth have big old fillings, the conversation about replacement belongs before the gel goes in.
Is the chairside “one hour” visit worth it? It is a payment for speed, not for a whiter endpoint: in-office high-concentration protocols achieve comparable colour to lower concentrations and to home trays, with a higher sensitivity profile in the reviews that compared them, and lower recurrence reported for home trays (Butera et al., Bioengineering (Basel) 2024-11-01, PMID 39767997) (Hajeer et al., Saudi Dent J 2026-03-01, PMID 41896506).
Does the effect last? Measurably, for a while: ΔE00 3.56 to 4.74 at 18 months across five in-office agents, with one group showing significant regression (Gönüllü et al., J Clin Med 2026-05-01, PMID 42123190), and the systematic review reporting less recurrence with home trays (Butera et al., Bioengineering (Basel) 2024-11-01, PMID 39767997). Nobody in this literature promises permanence, and coffee, tobacco and age are not in the sample.

How this page was built, and what it cannot tell you
Method: candidate records were located in Europe PMC with queries matching what people actually type, and every bibliographic entry used here — authors, journal, volume, pages, DOI, PMID, open-access flag, citation count — was re-fetched on the day of publication and is reproduced below with its DOI. Numbers were copied from the retrieved abstracts; where an abstract gives an interval, the interval is reproduced, and where it says the evidence is limited, so does this page. The single figure was drawn from one trial reporting one unit (ΔE00), so it cannot be read as an average of several studies. Coverage statements were read from the CMS InsureKidsNow benefit summary for Utah Medicaid (data as of 4 February 2026), including the negative finding that the document contains no bleaching or whitening line.
What this page cannot tell you: which product in your specific mouth will produce which shade, because the trials report group means with wide standard deviations — ΔE00 5.39 ± 2.50 means some participants changed far less than others (Chu et al., BMC Oral Health 2025-11-01, PMID 41194058). It cannot tell you the long-term safety of optical colour correctors, which their own meta-analysis flags as unstudied (Jelenčiakova et al., Int J Dent Hyg 2026-05-01, PMID 41423735). It cannot tell you whether a single grey tooth will lighten adequately, because that depends on whether the cause is pulp-related, which is a diagnostic work-up and not a product (Aljanahi et al., Br Dent J 2025-06-01, PMID 40579512). And it cannot tell you anything about pregnancy, because nobody has run that trial. What it can do is keep the decision on the level of the evidence: low concentration, no lamp, desensitiser from day one, realistic expectations about restorations, and a suspicion of any label nobody has to answer for (Fittler et al., Heliyon 2023-09-01, PMID 37809774).
